舞台は1830年代のオーストラリアのシドニー。土地の名士サムとその妻ヘンリエッタのもとに、故国アイルランドから総督の甥チャールズがやってくる。チャールズはヘンリエッタの幼なじみで、夫婦仲がうまくいかないことから酒びたりで身も心も病んでいたヘンリエッタを立ち直らせようと努力する。だが、夫サムも仲良くする2人を快く思わず、メイドのミリーも思いを寄せるサムの心を得ようとサムの嫉妬をけしかける・・・。
