日本人が最も好んだ物語「忠臣蔵」の番外編である。大石内蔵助を始めとする赤穂浪士や吉良上野介・小林平八郎・清水一学が登場する作品だが、主人公は、浅野でも吉良でも上杉でもない土屋主税である。土屋主税が赤穂浪士に協力して、主君浅野内匠頭の敵打ちをする話。直参旗本である土屋主税の屋敷が、吉良上野介の屋敷の隣で、討ち入りの際、吉良を助けることもなく、むしろ灯りをともして、邸内を見え易くしたりして助成したことで知られている。
