この作品は、過去にも何回か映画化されているが、阪妻にとっては、晩年の主演作になる。あいかわらず、豪快な役も演じきっている。子の中で阪妻は、不正を働いた同僚を斬って脱藩した神尾喬之助と浪人茨右近の二役を演じており、セリフ回しも、その風貌同様歌舞伎口調の神尾とべらめえ調の右近と使い分けている。
