終戦後、時代劇が作れなかった時期に、時代劇の大スター・片岡千恵蔵が刀を拳銃に持ち替え、変装の得意な私立探偵を演じた現代劇の大ヒット作品である。映画のラスト近くで、千恵蔵演じる主人公が悪人たちに向って、謎ときをした後で、正体を問われ「ある時は片目の運転手、ある時は…、その実体は…」という決めセリフは、ある年代以上の人にとっては、一度は耳にしたことがあり、時代劇における水戸黄門の「この印籠が目に入らぬか…このお方こそ先の副将軍…」に匹敵する程、一世風靡した娯楽作である。
