表向きはお城の御数寄屋坊主、実際は街中でゆすりたかりを業としている河内山宗俊を主人公にした物語。たまたま若い侍を救った宗俊は、その若侍の父親がある藩の筆頭家老だったが、作事家老一味の不正を摘発しようとして、逆に殺されてしまったことを知る。その若侍は父親が残した悪党一味の不正を証明する書類を持っていたから、狙われていたのだった。河内山宗俊が、若侍を助けて悪者退治をする痛快時代劇である。
