この作品は、おそらく戦前からの丹下左膳像を踏襲しているものと思われる。妖刀を巡って暗躍する暗殺軍団や無頼の旗本や遊び人だけでなく、南町奉行大岡越前守の配下の捕り方まで、平気で切り殺す凶暴な丹下左膳、無声映画でお馴染みだった大殺陣シーンの見せ場もたくさんの懐かしいチャンバラ映画である。
